I got off the Maori roll about 20 years ago for the exact same reasons. Love the way you think and your courage to speak your truth Corina. You articulate a commonsense logic for those of us that find it difficult to express ourselves adequately.

I love reading what you have to say. Talk about the voice of reason.

This BS about the census has got so many people asking why are they doing this? And Corina comes along and says its because of the election silly! So thanks for answering that question for me. This particular govt doesnt seem to do anything without an ulterior motive.

And what I love most about you C, is that you demonstrate for all NZers - how you dont have to be a highly educated 'brains trust' (not saying you dont have brains just that you left school early) to get on with understanding politics and having a voice and making a difference.

At the end of the day NZs problems are Maori problems and vice versa. If we build a decent society, we all benefit and are better placed to listen to and care about each other, rather than all the disadvantaged snapping at each other in order to survive. I am absolutely terrified of what's going to happen if we get 3 more years of this. A lifetime Labour voter, I generally dont like right wing policies but I will not vote on the left this election because it will be a death knell for NZ.

I appreciate your feedback Nicola. Thank you 🙏. The education system failed me but I feel life experience, a love of reading and my guidance up above has always seen me head in the right direction.

I share my life experiences in hopes it encourages others to go do things they wouldn't ordinarily do.

That's exactly it NZ's problems are Māori problems and when we put race aside we might actually fix some of them. This division helps nobody but the government and their pockets.

Great commentary. .

Originally I was on the Maori roll was because I felt my information was less public (given that most people wouldn't think to look, and even then they would have to figure out the area). Being forced to publically record your address is an out of date concept imho.

I'm no longer on it because as you rightly say the selections are limited, and no way in hell am I ever voting Lab/Green again.

The second reason is that we seem to have elected the laziest and most biased group ever.

Given recent events in New Zealand, it may not be safe to openly identify as Maori. Sounds OTT, but whatever, it's my life and that's how I'm reading the general mood.

Hi Corina, I’m loving your writing. My Dad is Australian, my mum’s side arrived in NZ from the 1850 from the UK and Germany. I am also a naturalised British citizenship after living in the UK with my husband who is British by descent. I have always considered myself foremost a New Zealander even though I hold 3 passports. Now I question where do I belong in this country? I am a primary school teacher and want all my students to succeed. How can we be New Zealanders together living in peace, giving all children a great education without race/culture being divisive rather than something to celebrate?

I almost feel like Sue Grey should run for a Maori seat. I don't know if the freedom party will gather enough votes, especially since now Mr tamaki is co leader. Too polarized. And democracy nz seems to be making lots of ground.

Perhaps a switch could get those few left on the role a person to vote for....

I left the Maori roll for the same reasons. Less representation & a n elected member who couldn’t care less about their constituents they were supposedly representing

HI Corina, A great post. Just one comment on size of the electorates. Electorates are designed to contain approximately the same number of people, which I believe is 65,000. There is a variaiton limit of 5% allowed so an electorate should contain between 61,750 and 68,250. So the average Maori electorate has 67,500. This though does mean they have to cover a much larger area. So the Maori MP will represent the same number of people, but has to cover a much larger area to do that.

This push by Labour to get "Maori"onto a Maori roll is akin to what happened 200 years ago when they were offered trinkets and beads... disgraceful.

Thank you for this post Corina. As a Kiwi who’s lived in Aus for over 30 years I’ve never voted in the NZ election; it didn’t feel right expressing my political opinion when I wasn’t actually living there. These past few years have changed my mind . I am enrolling (& voting)) this year. Keep up the great work lovely lady.

I have shared this post to tumblr, hope you don’t mind
